"Erected by the Cooper's Hill Society to commemorate the Royal Indian Engineering College which occupied these buildings from 1871 to 1906 and trained engineer, telegraph and forest officers for the public services in India and Burma. Graduates of the College served with distinction in India, Burma and many other parts of the world and some held commissions in the Royal Engineers and Royal Artillery. On the closing of the College the record of their achievements was described by the Times in these words: Thus passed away an institution which has made history and gained prestige for British Engineers throughout the world"
